In a Drug Discovery program, the goal is to qualitatively investigate a large number of compounds, narrow the selection through more targeted synthesis and screening (lead optimization), and finally to select potentially viable therapeutic candidates. It is then the responsibility of Drug Development to completely characterize candidate compounds by performing drug metabolism, pre-clinical and clinical screening, clinical trials, QA/QC, and eventually develop a means of manufacturing the final product.
