Pneumatic Flat Grips

Pneumatic Flat Grips

Pneumatic flat grips are some of the most common tensile fixtures in static testing. The grips center samples to align with the loading axis and maintain a constant pressure for the duration of the test. These features ensure that your sample will remain securely fixtured, aligned with the primary loading axis and protected from excessive clamping force. Materials such as rubbers, plastics, elastomers, textiles, cloth and paper can be securely fixtured without being damaged.

Select between the standard temperature and high temperature ‘bellows’ type flat grips and pair them with one of four pneumatic controllers. All pneumatic flat grips include single-side file-teeth grip faces and finger guards. Additional grip face options, including wave, rubber-coated, and high-strength rubber-coated, are available. See the section on Grip Faces for more details.

Additional items needed for operation:

- An external 0.7 MPa (7 kgf/cm2, 102 psi) air compressor

Operation

Adjust the air supply pressure to achieve the desired clamping force. Place the sample between the grip faces using the alignment markers to center the sample. Actuate the grip using the optional pneumatic switch to secure the sample in the upper grip followed by the lower grip.

Foot Valve Unit

Shimadzu’s foot valve unit is a two-position pneumatic switch with two pedals and a pressure regulator integrated into the back of the unit. Press the pedal once to close the grips and secure the sample. Press the pedal again to open the grips and release the sample.

Hand-operated Switching Unit

Hand-operated Switching Unit

Shimadzu’s hand-operated switch utilizes two pneumatic toggle valves. One valve operates the upper grip and the other operates the lower grip. Actuating the switch supplies air pressure to the grips and clamps the sample firmly. Reversing the switch vents the air pressure to open the grips for your next test.

Smart Controller Operation

Smart Controller Operation

Shimadzu’s smart controller enables handheld operation of pneumatic grips. Both the AGX-V and AGS-X smart controllers incorporate dedicated switches for upper and lower grips for a coherent user experience. Enable the auto start and auto release functions to conduct tests faster and more efficiently.

F-type Crosshead-linked Foot Switch

F-type Crosshead-linked Foot Switch

The F-type crosshead-linked foot switch is a two-position electronic switch with two pedals. Press the pedal once to close the grips and secure the sample. Press the pedal again to open the grips and release the sample. Enable the auto start and auto release functions to conduct tests faster and more efficiently.

Note 1: The applicable specimen thickness is valid only for grip faces supplied with the grips and may change when other grip faces are used.

Note 2: The operational temperature range of pneumatic flat grips is reduced to between 0 and 60°C (0 and 140°F) when rubber-coated grip faces are installed.
