Analysis of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Solid Waste

Persistent organic pollutants (POP), sometimes referred to as Chemicals of Emerging Concern (CEC) are toxic chemicals that may affect human or aquatic life and are known, or suspected of occurring in the environment. Many of them, such as PFAS, are considered widely distributed, while others, such as glyphosate or atrazine, may only be distributed locally. Many of these chemicals are not regulated, but found in but are listed in 40 CFR Part 264 Appendix IX. and often requested groundwater monitoring.

Additionally, many of the methods in SW-846 use older technology and may be analyzed by newer techniques, such as GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS. An example is the analysis of pesticides and herbicides by Method 8321B using LC-MS/MS or the analysis of Dioxins and Furans by Method 8290 or Method 8280 using GC-MS/MS.
