Are we ready for On-line Sensor and Analyzer methods for Environmental Compliance Monitoring?

There is an increasing use of on-line sensors and continuous analyzers in testing wastewater for process control at wastewater treatment plants. Many have asked, "when is EPA going to allow the use of these sensors for compliance testing?" One problem is that EPA does not approve instruments for wastewater testing, it approves methods and there almost no on-line analyzer or sensor methods approved for wastewater? This presentation discusses some of the concerns regarding the use of online analysis and suggests solutions that could be used to develop new methods that could eventually be proposed by EPA in coming method update rules.
