Around 12 million people worldwide suffer from chronic or acute liver failure, according to an estimate by the World Health Organization. Tests for enzymes in the blood, such as alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, are widely used for early diagnosis of liver disease and evaluating overall liver function. These tests are often used in conjunction with an assessment of all bile acids. As a result, there is a demand to carry out simultaneous assays for an individual bile acid as well as total bile acids.
