Shimadzu’s response to AOAC’s call for methods, addressing all PFAS required of the SMPR in 11 matrix categories:

To address AOAC’s call for methods, we developed an LCMS/MS method testing all 30 compounds for all 11 matrices. Our flexible prep workflow is designed to save you time and money, while all samples can be run using the Shimadzu Nexera Liquid Chromatograph coupled to a Shimadzu LCMS-8060NX triple quadrupole mass spectrometer.

 
  • PFAS testing workflow as required of the SMPR in 11 matrix categories:
  • The use of EPA 1633 for animal tissues raised a need for PFAS screening in products meant for human consumption. AOAC, the standards organization for food safety and food testing, responded to the need by calling for methods and detailed method needs in their SMPR 2023.003.

    Shimadzu was one of 4 responders to AOACs SMPR 2023.003 on targeted analysis of PFAS in foods covering all 30 PFAS and 11 food categories. Now accepted as a First Action method, the method developed on the Shimadzu TQ LCMS 8060NX will be in Official Methods of Analysis for general use.

    To make the method as streamlined as possible, we had the samples follow the same general procedure. Generally, all samples were homogenized, processed with QuEChERS where needed, cleaned up with SPE, then concentrated if needed before injection to the TQ LCMS 8060NX.

    Where we found a step did not improve results, we skipped it – saving laboratories consumables, time, and money.

    Accepted for the OMA, the method met or exceeded the needs of SMPR 2023.003. We continue to work with AOAC for PFAS testing in food contact materials, and with ASTM for other consumer products.
