5 kN Grips for Fine Wire

Shimadzu’s fine wire grips offer a convenient method for tensile testing soft metal wires, ropes, and strings with a diameter of 3 mm (0.12 in) or less. The upper and lower grips include an articulating joint to improve alignment of the specimen with the loading axis. Serrations in the screw vise ensure samples are securely fastened and crescent-shaped wire guides reduce stress concentrations to promote proper failure between the grips.

Operation
The wire is first secured in one of the screw vises by tightening the handle. Route the sample around the crescent-shaped wire guides and secure it into the opposing screw vise. Apply enough tension in the wire to eliminate slack. A counterweight on the upper grip can be adjusted to maintain alignment and reduce inertial effects.
