Pneumatic Capstan Grips for Yarn and Cables

Pneumatic Capstan Grips for Yarn and Cables

Shimadzu’s pneumatic capstan grips are ideal for testing yarn and metal wires. The pneumatic switches promote usability by allowing the operator to actuate the grips while using both hands to pretension the samples. Horned bollards on the upper and lower grips make routing samples easy and encourage samples to fail between the grips by gradually relieving clamping stresses caused by the grip faces.

The pneumatic capstan grips for yarn are available in three capacities: 500 N (11 lbf), 1 kN (220 lbf), and 5 kN (1,100 lbf). Replaceable grip faces are included with the grips. These capstan grips can be controlled with a Foot Valve Unit or C-type Crosshead-linked interlock switch. 500 N capstan grips are only compatible with a Foot Valve Unit.

Additional item needed for operation: External 0.7 MPa (7 kgf/cm2, 102 psi) air compressor.

Operation

Mount the specimen by placing it around the horned bollards and thread the loose ends between the grip faces. Actuate the grips using the Foot Valve Unit or the C-Type switch to secure the sample in place.  A consistent pretension is easy to achieve using the C-type switch’s spring-loaded lever.

Operation of the lower grip

Shimadzu’s foot valve unit is a two-position pneumatic switch with two pedals and a pressure regulator integrated into the back of the unit. Press the pedal once to close the grips and secure the sample. Press the pedal again to open the grips and release the sample.
